ACEPHALA - Division by Zero
GENRE: Death metal COUNTRY: Ukraine FORMAT: CD LABEL: SFC Records YEAR: March 18th, 2010 RATING: 6/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: SFC Records The Ukrainian band Acephala plays brutal death metal. The five-piece is inspired by Cannibal Corpse, Devourment and Mental Demise among other. The band doesn't do anything that hasn't been done by others and there's not much in the music that makes it different from so much else. In terms of the riffs, the vocals and the music as a whole you can spot many of the bands that the five-piece likes. Of course this doesn't automatically make Division by Zero a bad effort, and it isn't. It's just a common effort. I like the song-writing, it's good and the band plays tight. The Ukrainians add lots of heavy slam parts to go with the fast pieces. There's also a fair amount of groove in the music. Songs like "Frozen, Devastated, Dead", "Castration" and "Bombs for Third World" all underline what I wrote above. Something I don't like about Division by Zero is the lyrics. I know it's a minor detail, but it does affect my view on the music to some degree. Actually I don't know the lyrics, but the titles do give an idea. I think it's a shame that many bands tend to take it easy when it comes to the lyrics or the artwork. Things should fit together and they don't here. The titles are immature and there seem to be no red line in them. I think it's annoying now that the music is okay. Something I do like is the production. It fits the music just right, and helps emphasize the groovy and brutal in the songs. Division by Zero is above all a standard effort, but as I already wrote that doesn't make it bad. |
