ALTARS - Demo 2008

GENRE: Death metal
COUNTRY: Australia
FORMAT: CD
LABEL: Self financed
YEAR: 2008

RATING: 6/10
REVIEWED BY: PSL
PROVIDED BY: Altars

Altars play experimental death metal and they do that very well. The band draws on inspiration from both death, doom and drone metal. The music is gloomy and quite diverse. Despite of this being the first release from Altars the band does a fine job.

The song-writing is good and the Australians prove they can create music that is heavy, odd and catchy. The band has found a balance between the slow and the more up-tempo elements in the music that feels just right. The sound is meaty, but a little too muddy now and then. To some degree it affects the experience of the music as a few of the details tend be a little blurry.

If Altars is able to make their sound a bit clearer, but maintain the heavy, crisp and meaty feel in their music then they've come far. What the four piece show on this demo definitely promise well for what next to come.
