AVULSED - Nullo: The Pleasure of Self-Mutilation
GENRE: Death metal COUNTRY: Spain FORMAT: CD LABEL: Xtreem Music YEAR: June 1st, 2009 RATING: 8/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: Xtreem Music Nullo - The Pleasure of Self-Mutilation is the latest full-length from the long running Spanish death metal band Avulsed. Dave Rotten & Co sticks to their guns on Nullo - The pleasure of Self-Mutilation and continue to do what made them known to start with. The music is gore filled death metal. It's definitely not inventive, but in spite of this better than so much else. The song-writing is consistent. The music has lots of catchy parts and interesting hooks. There are parts that could be categorised as choruses, like on "Penectomia" or "She's Hot Tonight [in My Oven]". On the whole the five-piece are good at varying the music and throw in bits of melody when needed. The music also a somewhat of a thrashy vibe now and then, like on "She's Hot Tonight [in My Oven]. All these different things makes the music all that more exciting. The tempo is diverse, although the band often sticks to a less fast and more moderate tempo. That gives space for some noteworthy parts, like on the titletrack or "Nazino [Cannibal Hell]". The Spaniards also adds a solo or two here and there. I like this as it provide the music with some additional feel. Dave's vocals are a mix of guttural, burping growls and a raspy type of vocal. It's not anything different, but it fits the songs just right. Avulsed prove with Nullo - The Pleasure of Self-Mutilation that after more than 18 years the Spanish five-piece is far from finished. Nullo - The Pleasure of Self-Mutilation is difficult to avoid for fans of old school death metal or extreme metal in general. |
