Collapse is the latest effort from the Finish band Blastanus. The music on Collapse is a bit different than on Odd. The music is inspired by Origin, The Faceless, Cephalic Carnage and to some degree that can be heard.
The Finns are on the whole good song-writers, but a few of the songs seem a little uninspired. I mean there are parts here and there that most of all feels like filler, it's mostly the slower parts that can be a little boring. However the heavy and fast elements are largely able to save the songs.
As I wrote before the bands inspirations are noticeable. The song "Arctic Despair" has some very Origin-like riffs. A track like "Evolutionary Dead End" makes me think of Cannibal Corpse. The band uses a bit of saxophone on the titletrack. I guess the Finns got that idea from Cephalic Carnage, but nonetheless it works as a great asset and I would love to hear more of that.
In spite of the obvious clues to the bands that the four-piece idolize, the Finns are able to add their own thing to the music. The music isn't all that different, but it works like it should. It seems that the band in general has slowed down a notch or two. It doesn't hurt, but the music is most interesting when the four-piece blast and grind.
I wasn't fond of the production on Odd, but it's different with Collapse. The sound is rich and crunchy and it fits the songs just right. On the whole Collapse is a step up the ladder, but there are still room for improvements.
