It seems that band names get more and more odd and the Finish band Blastanus is no exception. Odd is also the title of the debut. The music on the other hand is not that odd. It's a mix of various genres, but the red line is death metal, but there are lots of references to punk, grindcore and even black metal, like on "Incarnation".

The four Finns are inspired by bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan, Origin and Rotten Sound among others. Many of these are noticeable, but the band does add their own touch to the music. I wouldn't say that the music is atypical, but it's not exactly all that conventional either. The Finns blast and grind a lot and I like that. I also like that the band often change between the brutal, fast and slower and abnormal parts.

My biggest problem with Odd is the production. The guitars tend to be somewhat thin sounding. However the Blastanus is to some degree able to compensate for this due to the variation in the music, but too often things doesn't sound all the compact and it does affect the overall impression.

Odd is not bad for a debut and Blastanus do prove that a label isn't necessarily needed for a band to make a professional effort.
