Brutal US death metallers Bloodchurn originate out of the muddy Mississippi. The band plays the kind of brutal death metal that I really like. The music is heavily influenced by Suffocation. This means death metal with lots of heavy and slow mosh parts. Occasionally there's a dose of blastbeats, but the music never become one long pummel. The music is mostly kept in a rather moderate pace. The songs are fairly diverse often switching back and forth in tempo, but they lack with regard to leads which there practically are none of. There's a bit in "Gouge Your Eyes Out", but it's not much. The band does show teeth in songs like "Strings of Salvation" and "A Cataclysmic Blessing", but unfortunately it never gets really interesting.
Sadly it's the production that sort of spoils Ravenous Consumption as it's not that thick and massive as it should be for this type of music. It's in particular the guitars who don't sound very heavy and brutal. The Suffocation references are many, but Bloodchurn do add a bit of identity to the songs so it doesn't sound like a complete rip-off. Ravenous Consumption is not a bad effort, but it's not that convincing either. A thicker sound would definitely have made this a more enjoyable encounter.
