BY THE PATIENT - Servants
GENRE: Death metal COUNTRY: Denmark FORMAT: CD LABEL: Self financed YEAR: September, 2010 RATING: 8/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: By The Patient The Danish band By The Patient has made a larger turn in direction on Servants. Contrary to the Danes earlier effort Catenation of Adversity the music on Servants is full-fledged death metal. The music today is just like on Catenation of Adversity very inspired by American death metal, but there's also a lot of European and above all Polish death metal in the mix. As proved on Catenation of Adversity the five Danes are good songwriters and the songs on Servants are diverse and overall interesting. But like most other bands By The Patient rely on the common features of the genre. There are both fast and slow parts as well as groove. The riffs are competent and cohesive, and the solos add that extra something to the songs. I like what the band do on "Manifesting the Cleansing", "Deciphered" or "Engulfed in Prosthetic Prophecies" to name three songs. Like on Catenation of Adversity the vocals are your standard type of thing, but I don't mind that. The vocalist Tan Møhl-Hansen put an effort in changing his vocals and he is good at using both the common death metal vocal and a more shouting type of singing. The production is thick, but not in a way where things get blurry. It does give the music the needed weight as well as underlining the array that the songs have. By Danish standards Servants is a bit different, but looking at American or European bands then By The Patient doesn't try anything unheard. That of course doesn't make the music less good and if you're looking for some competent death metal then By The Patient could be just the right band. |
