CARNAL DECAY - On Top of the Food Chain
GENRE: Brutal death metal COUNTRY: Switzerland FORMAT: CD LABEL: Sevared Records YEAR: 2011 RATING: 6/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: Carnal Decay The Swiss band Carnal Decay always seems to have had a somewhat laid back approach in terms of song-titles, lyrics and artwork. It's not any different on On Top of the Food Chain. It makes it all a bit cartoonish, but what the band lacks visually the four-piece are largely able to compensate for in the music. The music is off course Americanized brutal death metal in the vein of Deeds Of Flesh, Gorgasm and bands similar. Not sure if it's just the guitar tone, but I hear bits and pieces of Sinister in the music as well. The song-writing is good and the music diverse. It has all that you'd expect of the genre. It's all very conventional. You have the fast, the slow and the groove driven slam parts. The band doesn't try to be different and I like that. Music doesn't automatically have to be original to be good and I think the four-piece has made a CD that is catchy and have enough nerve and strength to be interesting. In the past I've criticized the band of using too many samples. That's not an issue on On Top of the Food Chain. Sure there are samples used here and there, but overall it fit the music just right. On Top of the Food Chain is a run-of-the-mill effort. It's not a jaw-dropping effort, but it's definitely not a bad effort either. If you like brutal death metal with no unnecessarily filler then you can't go wrong with On Top of the Food Chain. |
