Estonian death metal is something I rarely get to hear. Actually this may very well be the first time. I didn't exactly expect a whole lot of ingenuity from the Estonians and it immediately becomes clear that my assumption wasn't wrong. Catafalc does in no way try anything that hasn't already been done one way or the other, but that doesn't mean that the band don't understand how to create some potent and diverse death metal. The band may sound like so many other, but still they have created their own sound.
The music mostly rely on the slower mid-tempo parts, but obviously Catafalc also know the importance of adding loads of fast and more brutal elements as well. Overall it makes a fairly organic blend without impressing too much. The sound is raw, but it doesn't sound muddy. It goes well with the music and definitely adds to making the songs sound tighter and more powerful. If you don't expect your death metal to be inventive then Catafalc might be worth a closer look. They did impress me enough to look forward to what next to come from the band.
