Condemned is a brutal death metal band from San Diego, California. The bands debut Desecrate the Vile was issued in 2007. That effort didn't do much for me, but it's different with Realms of the Ungodly. The music is brutal death metal. It's about as conventional as it gets, but I don't care.

The song-writing is good and above all diverse. The music isn't always fast. Actually there's a lot of slow or slam parts. It fits the overall feel of the music nicely and when the five-piece do gear up a notch or two and play faster it all feels that more brutal.

There are not a whole lot of solos used, but those that are help underline the disturbing feel that the music has, like on the titletrack "Realms of the Ungodly".

The band use a good amount of samples and these fit the music just right. It's not the usually annoying shit that is taken from movies. In a way it makes me think a bit of what Obituary did on Cause of Death, but the samples on Realms of the Ungodly have a much more agonizing feel to them. It's all very well tied together with the artwork. To me that is a big part of what makes Realms of the Ungodly a complete effort.

The vocals are of course low end and guttural, just like it should be. The production is arid and the drums do to some extent have a hollow, tin can type of sound. I think the production fit the music just right as it's easy to hear what is going on. And in spite of that the sound is brutal and tight.

If you like American style death metal in the vein of early Decrepit Birth, Flesh Consumed or Disgorge then Realms of the Ungodly is a must.
