The Virginia based quartet Cyaegha show some interesting ideas on the debut Steps of Descent. As the band name suggests Cyaegha is heavily influenced by the literary works of H.P. Lovecraft. The music is death metal with a menacing and chaotic twist. A thing that almost immediately is noticeable is the audible bass and it gives the music a chunky feel. The song-writing is convincing and it's obvious that the band put a lot of effort in making the music appealing and thrilling.

The songs are detailed, but not in a way where it become too much and a track like the instrumental "Obductio Sapientia" helps emphasize the gloomy in the music and lyrics. Cyaegha don't exactly come up with things unheard on Step of Descent but the songs are competent and tightly played and that sure make up for that. The production is dry, but meaty. It fits the music and adds that extra something that make it a complete effort. Steps of Descent is a compelling debut that promise well for what next to come.
