COUNTRY: Germany

YEAR: April 5th, 2011

RATING: 7/10

Cytotoxin is a brutal German five-piece. The music is Americanized death metal in the vein of Defeated Sanity, Katalepsy, Abysmal Torment and those similar. There's lots of groove and slam parts as a contrast to the faster parts. It works well and it's obvious that the band know what they are doing.

There's nothing different about the music. The band relies on all the clichés of the genre. The riffs are nothing out of the ordinary, but it works the way it should and that's what matters. The drumming is solid and I like the somewhat hollow ring that the little drum has.

The music is tight and heavy. The five-piece mostly focus on the slow and groovy elements in the music. I like that as it gives the songs a smashing feel. "Human Mud" and "Plutonium Heaven" are examples of that.

The vocals are of course low end growls mixed with pig squeals. I like this a lot as it fits the music perfect. As well as adding a bit to the brutality of the songs. The band do of course use samples and lots of them, but unlike many other CD's the samples seem to fit the songs and help underline the issues that the lyrics are about and that profit the music.

The production is what you'd expect. It's thick and beefy. And that suits the music well. Plutonium Heaven is nothing atypical, but it's a nice effort that ought to be of interest to anyone who like brutal death metal with lots of groove and slam parts.
