Finland is by many mostly known for bands like Lordi, Nightwish and Children Of Bodom, but people with a wider knowledge of the Finnish music scene know there's a myriad of extreme bands as well and Deathbound is one of those. Dynamic Arts just re-released the Finns' 2003 debut To Cure the Sane with Insanity. Moreover Deathbound just finished recording their new album We Deserve Much Worse so there was plenty to ask vocalist Kai Jaakkola about.

Kai Jaakkola interviewed by PSL

You just finished recording the follow-up to Doomsday Comfort. Are you finished mixing and mastering the effort or is there still work to be done?
There's still mastering to do. Everything feels really great because the material sounds really "in your face" allready. To fuck this up you have to be one retarded bastard.

Since your previous album Doomsday Comfort the bassist Q has left the band. Has this affected the sound and direction of the new material?
Not at all, though the sound has changed a little but that's not because Q left. Sami and Pete have allways made the songs and we've all decided on the outcome so there's no big change. The bass is still as distorted and furious as when Q was in the band.

Could you provide us with some hints of how the new album We Deserve Much Worse compares to your previous efforts?
As I already told you we are really satisfied with the whole thing. None who liked the previous albums will get dissapointed by this. But I guess some will open up their ears a little more for this! It's a great blend of groove, brutality, mosh parts and even some old school hardcore! At least that's what we hear [laughs], others might just hear the same old [laughs]. Naah we are very confident.

You recorded the debut To Cure the Sane with Insanity at Biotech Audio Solutions. What were you motives for going back there to record We Deserve Much Worse?
Well because the guy there has become much better at what he does and has a great ear for this kind of music. The location is also optimal because it's right above our rehearsal place! Our debut was also recorded with the same guy, but in a different place. Back then he rented a huge studio in the darkwoods of Vaasa which was really nice also, but this time he had all his equipment which he knows like the insides of his own pockets. So there was never this kind "Hmmm wonder what this does" scenario [laughs]. He is a real good guy who does alot of different stuff. Now he works as the FOH guy for Amorphis. A pro so to speak.

Dynamic Arts has just reissued To Cure the Sane with Insanity. How did that come around?
Dynamic Arts liked the album and the prints had sold out on Woodcut Records, so they bought the rights and released it. It was our idea to put the bonuses in there, as we allready had those songs recorded and mixed. So why not use them there?

The CD was released with new packaging and some bonus material as well. Has there been done anything else to the CD like remixing and similar?
No remixing was needed, why ruin some good brutality? Just the things you mentioned were done.

Could you say something about the bonus material on the reissue?
Well the live tracks were recorded live at the Tuska festival, it shows the true us. Maybe the sound could've been a little better, but it would've been too much of an effort to start mixing that shit again [bonuses are bonuses]. The video was made by Sami who just took some live clips and put them together. Really old school!

Bands like Napalm Death and Nasum appear to have had a huge influence on you musically. Are they still as important to you today as they were when you recorded To Cure the Sane with Insanity?
Of course they're important! But it's never been about copying stuff, just ripping off the good parts and putting them through the Deathbound filter. It's not that long since we recorded To Cure the Sane with Insanity, now is it? You made me feel old [laugh]. We are not trying to invent the wheel again, just trying to keep things interesting.

Which albums do you think is essential in any death metal or grindcore collection?
Carcass Reek of Putrefaction, Autopsy Mental Funeral, Napalm Death Scum, Entombed Left Hand Path as well as loads and loads more albums which I don't want to sit and write down. There are still good albums released by great bands all the time.

You're all involved in other bands besides Deathbound. Does that affect the band and where do you feel your main priority lies?
Well this question has been asked alot nowadays, but here goes again: My first priority is always the band or anything I'm doing at the moment. I'm 100% dedicated to what I do, so there's no half assed shit coming out. It's only a matter of organising your schedules. It affects the bands of course, but if it affects in a negative way it's for others to decide and destroy their braincells with.

How does the remainder of 2006 looks in terms of concerts and so forth?
Well, we are mostly thinking about 2007 and the new release and what happens after that. But surely some one-off gigs will come our way, none at the moment though. We've got our other commitments in other bands also to occupy our time, so it's not like we are sitting and waiting for something to happen.

Good I guess? There are some really great bands here, with alot to give to the metal scene in general. Total Devastation is one to look out for. Scorngrain,Sotajumala and Deathchain is fucking amazing too! The bands you mentioned don't please my taste except Children Of Bodom sometimes and in small doses. should also be checked out if you have been living in a barrel for the last 10 years!

Anything you wish to add to conclude this interview?
If you for some reason don't allready have To Cure the Sane with Insanity or Doomsday Comfort go and buy them! Others who already have them can sit right back and press play and listen to them.
