The American death metal band Decrepit Birth took a somewhat drastic turn in direction on Diminishing Between Worlds. On Polarity the band continue the way set on Diminishing Between Worlds. The music is what you've come to expect from Decrepit Birth and Polarity sees the band in their best form yet

The song-writing is superb. It doesn't feel unnatural or like the music is arbitrarily put together. Most of the riffs are immense. Contrary to many other bands Matt Sotelo & Co is able to harmonize the music and make it all coherent. It's difficult to ignore the strong inspiration from Chuck Schuldiner and Death. Many of the riffs and solos are very similar to those of Death. And to me the Californian five-piece is like a modernized Death. It's definitely not a bad thing, but unfortunately the sound is a bit unoriginal now and then. In particular when Matt plays a solo.

Bill Robinson doesn't have the most varied vocals, but his vocals do fit the music very well so it's not much of an issue. On tracks like "A Brief Odyssey in Time" and "Darkness Embrace" the band adds a bit of keyboard. I like this as it adds a lot to the feel of the music.

No matter how I twist and turn it I can't find any weak spots on Polarity. The production is just right. It has the needed thickness, but also the transparency so none of the riffs or parts tends to vanish. Polarity is another step up the ladder for Decrepit Birth. The band is now among the elite of the genre.
