DEFEATED SANITY - Chapters of Repugnance
GENRE: Brutal death metal COUNTRY: Germany FORMAT: CD LABEL: Hammerheart Records YEAR: February 7th, 2011 RATING: 8/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: Hammerheart Records After a three year wait, a few changes in the line-up the German four-piece has put out the bands most brutal effort so far. If the line-up changes has anything to do with that I don't know, but Chapters of Repugnance is not a recycle of the 2007 effort Psalms of the Moribund. The music is brutal death metal with lots of slam parts and groove. Of course many bands have done that before, but the four-piece mix all the brutality with lots spastic and jazzy inputs as well. It does give the music personality, but on the whole Chapters of Repugnance isn't all that different put side by side with most brutal death metal. Something I like a lot about the music is that it's exceedingly heavy. Obviously the slower parts emphasize that, but the fast parts do also help to convey that. The bass also get a lot of room in the songs and that's another thing I like about the music. It adds to the thick and untreated feel that the songs have. At first it may not seem like that, but the music is quite diverse and there are many tiny things going on in the songs that underline that. Vocalist A.J. Magana does a fine job. His vocals fit the music well, although he doesn't contribute a lot to the songs other than adding to the brutality, but that's fine with me. The production is the thickest I've heard in a while. It definitely adds that little extra something to the music that put it over the top. Chapters of Repugnance is a brutal effort. If you like your music in the vein of Suffocation, Pathology or Disgorge then you'll almost definitely like what the band is doing. |
