Deranged is one of those bands that appear to having always have been there, but I've never bothered to follow them too carefully. I liked the 1995 release Rated-X a lot, but their latter day material slipped my radar. I recently found their newest Obscenities in B-flat in my mail, and if that album is a guideline to their recent material, it sounds as if I haven't missed out on too much.

The music is simplistic and rather standardized death metal. No surprises. The band work their way through nine pretty unimaginative songs. During the first couple of listens, it's appears fairly interesting, but after a while it's not. There are some alright songs like "Coven of Death" and "Crawl with Me Through the Filth" who rescue the listener from complete boredom, but these are not enough to keep Obscenities in B-flat going. The super-filthy production doesn't help much either as it makes the music appear blurry.

Obscenities in B-flat is a middling effort with its small moments, but nothing that leaves a lasting impression. I fail to hear anything on Obscenities in B-flat that tells me why this should be preferable instead of anything else out there.
