I'm a big fan of Malevolent Creation and in particular their early albums so it wasn't without a certain amount of interest that I learned that former Malevolent Creation singer Brett Hoffmann had resurfaced in Buffalo, NY based Down The Drain. I decided to mail Brett a few questions about the past, present and future but unfortunately he turned out not to be the worlds most informative person.
You've been in Malevolent Creation at least two times, why did you originally split with the band after Stillborn and what made you rejoin them later on?
Dude, I don't know, there's so much bullshit I can't even remember. I rejoined 'cause I still enjoyed playing with Phil and Rob Barrett so that's why I came back. Also the machine Culross was there.
There have been rumours and speculations about the reason for your latest exit from Malevolent Creation. Could you shed some light on this matter?
Hypocrisy rules! And I don't rock the boat.
As far as I remember one of the reasons were an alleged drug and drinking problem, any truth in this?
I've said it before I'll say it again. I was in a death metal band not a fucking church choir and I ain't no angel. Live life!
Back in March 2002 you were also arrested at Miami International Airport for a drug related warrant from 1995 which supposedly were one of the things that tricked your split with the band. What is your side of that story?
Oh hell yeah! It was about a 6 or 7 year old warrant. I did about 10 days in Dade County jail and then extradited back to Broward County for another 4 days. Shit happens, I did my probation, took care of my shit and that's that… It had nothing to do with anything else.
I read somewhere that the band stated that you were unable to perform some of the earlier material. Is there any truth in this?
I've written about 60 or 70 songs… What am I a fucking karaoke machine? I have no problem performing my music! I am saying it's like riding a bicycle.
What was your musical highlight with Malevolent Creation?
Just playing with them guys, it was great fun. There are times I miss looking over and seeing Phil next to me slaughtering a crowd.
Why did you choose to move back to Buffalo, NY?
Burned out on Florida. Who the fuck knows, but it seems it has worked out.
You got a new band going called Down The Drain, could you tell a little about that?
Yeah it's great shit… The bass player jammed with Malevolent Creation way back when. He called me up to do Down The Drain and I dug it… let's go!
You made a demo last year. Is this something you're currently shopping around to various labels or is it too early to do that with only one demo in the luggage?
Shop whatever. If someone likes it's cool… If not, who the fuck cares. It will do what it's going to do.
You recently preformed live. Do you have any shows coming up in the coming months?
Local shows, we are working on some other things, just have to see what happens.
Have you yet to contribute to the upcoming Death tribute?
I've talked to James Murphy and we're just figuring out a schedule.
How does the future musical career of Brett Hoffmann look?
I will lay waste to anything in my way!
Anything you wish to add to conclude this interview?
I want to say a big up the horns to anyone and everyone that has stuck with me, Join me on this trek through hell and when we get there... We'll raise a beer and laugh like mother-fuckers… nice.
