DRAGGED INTO SUNLIGHT - Hatred for Mankind
GENRE: Deathdoom COUNTRY: England FORMAT: CD LABEL: Mordgrimm Records YEAR: 2009 RATING: 7/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: Mordgrimm Records To start with I got a three track taster to the Hatred for Mankind CD. That wasn't exactly enough for me to make an opinion of the music, and given that I've been able to get the last four songs. Another thing is that the info I got via Google wasn't exactly right. Hatred for Mankind was put out via Mordgrimm Records in 2009 and not 2008. The Terminal Aggressor EP was put out in March 2009, but the Widowmaker CD has yet to be issued. The music on Hatred for Mankind is a blend of doom and death metal with undertones of black metal. The songs are bleak and heavy, but opposite to many of the bands that play this sort of music Dragged Into Sunlight doesn't just rely on being slow. The five-piece also plays fast now and then. I like this as it adds some contrast to the slower and drone-like parts. There are a lot of samples used in the songs and these help set a disturbing vibe. The song "Totem of Skulls" is more of an ambient piece. It's full of ambiguous noises and spoken parts. The start of "Lashed to the Grinder and Stoned to Death" have a lot in common with "Slowly We Rot" by Obituary, but the death metal link is definitely there on other songs as well, like "I, Aurora" and "Buried with Leeches". For the most part Hatred for Mankind is very good. It has personality and is diverse, but it's also an effort that falls short now and then. Most of the songs are long and some of the riffs and parts are a bit anonymous, but Dragged Into Sunlight is largely able to get away with it. Give Hatred for Mankind a chance if you like music that is extreme, bleak and heavy as fuck. |
