Dying Fetus has been abbreviated to a trio after guitarist Mike Kimball left the band in 2008 and it made me worry a bit that the music wouldn't be as chunky and compact as earlier, but I was wrong. Again the line-up changes have had no effect on the music at all. John Gallagher & Co goes on with their signature-style of slamming death metal as if nothing has changed.

The music is typical Dying Fetus from start to finish - it's the usual mix of fast and brutal riffs added lots of groove, and slam parts. There's also a good share of breakdowns, as well as some abnormal riffs and parts now and then for additional variation. It works just like it should and something I like a lot is the unexpected changes on "Shepherd's Commandment", "Atrocious by Nature" and the titletrack where the music goes from fat grooves to fast and brutal parts. There also seems to be more solos this time. The band doesn't overdo it, but it definitely works as an asset.

Gallagher's low end grunts fit well with Sean Beasley's higher-register vocals. It provides the needed contrast in the vocals. Another thing that adds diversity to the music is the bass. The trio makes a lot more use of the bass this time and it gives the music a chunky feel. The production fits just right - it's fat and juicy, but not in a way so the details vanish or things get muddy.

I've read some criticism that Dying Fetus more or less is doing the same thing over and over. I don't know if I belong to the few, but something I like about the band is that the Americans this day rely on the same things that made them interesting to begin with. If you feel like I do then Descend into Depravity is a safe buy.
