You would think that music inspired by Death and Cynic would be good. Well, that's not exactly how I feel about The Audient Void. It's obvious that Dysthymia is inspired by the two American bands, but the Italians are also inspired by thrash metal and a bit of black metal as well.

There's a lot going on in the songs and there are many good riffs and parts. But the problem is that despite the good riffs and parts the music too often tends to be genderless and uninteresting. I can't help getting bored and it just gets worse the more I listen to the CD.

In a way the music just feels too refined and neat. The Italians do play fast now and then. It does help a bit, but too often the music tends to lack strength. Of course playing fast doesn't do it alone, but it can make a difference for the better in terms of power. The problem here is that it all just gets a bit too standard and anonymous. A few of the songs sounds like a poor copy of something Death or Cynic could have made.

Of course music doesn't have to be ingenious to be good, but The Audient Void is proof of how skilful playing also can be boring. The Audient Void is an average effort, but it's also an effort that most likely will vanish among what else is being put out.
