EMPATIC - Gods of Thousand Souls
GENRE: Death metal COUNTRY: Poland FORMAT: CD LABEL: Psycho Records YEAR: December 10th, 2010 RATING: 6/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: Psycho Records It seems Poland never runs dry of metal bands. Empatic is another band I've not heard of before. The five-piece play a mixture of death and thrash metal. The music is heavy and with a good amount of groove. There are bits of melody in the songs as well. Here and there it makes me think of Callenish Circle and Testament, but it's obvious that the five Poles has a variety of bands as inspiration. The song-writing is above all competent and the music diverse, it really comes to show on "Tomorrowland" and "Fulfilled Dreams". However some of the songs tend to get boring a bit too fast. Here I'm thinking of songs like "Dreamer", "Vs" and "So What". What I miss is some faster parts to boost the energy as the music now and then tends to be torpid and without much intensity or nerve. The music works the best when the band gear up a notch or two, like on "False Friend", "Fullfilled Dreams" or "Empatic". The band finish it all of with a rendition of "Enola Gay" by the British synthpop band OMD. It's not bad, but doesn't really make any difference. The production is thick and juicy. The fat and heavy guitar tone profits the music a lot. Gods of Thousand Souls is very good for a debut, but the five-piece need to spice things up a bit before it gets really interesting. If you like death metal mixed with lots of thrash metal groove then you'll definitely like Gods of Thousand Souls. |
