Long running Danish death metallers Exmortem is after a label switch ready with the successor to 2002's Pestilence Empire. The new and fifth effort Nihilistic Contentment doesn't differ a whole lot from the past material, however it does seem slightly more memorable this time. In particular songs like the opener "Flesh Havoc", "Black Walls of Misery" and "Fix of Negativity" has an interesting and fairly catchy approach but unfortunately a lot of the remaining material seems somewhat anonymous.

Nihilistic Contentment is an album that offers a flood of frantic and relentlessly brutal death metal, but without much identity. It's hard to ignore the clear references to a combo like Immolation, though Exmortem doesn't quite reach their level. This being said the music is still a good bit above average and songs like the abovementioned "Flesh Havoc", "Black Walls of Misery" and "Fix of Negativity" really drags the album out of the dead water that it occasionally sinks into. Nihilistic Contentment is definitely not for everyone with its cold and clinical approach but it's still worth giving a try if you're looking for some grim death metal.
