EXPURGO - Burial Ground
GENRE: Grindcore COUNTRY: Brazil FORMAT: CD LABEL: Black Hole Productions YEAR: December 17th, 2010 RATING: 7/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: Black Hole Productions Expurgo is a Brazilian four-piece. The band plays dirty grindcore in the vein of Regurgitate, early Carcass, but I hear a bit of Machetazo in there as well. Besides grindcore the band finds inspiration in punk, hardcore, goregrind and death metal. There's not exactly anything different in what the Brazilians are doing, but it's not much of an issue. The music is straight forward and mostly fast, but it has the needed diversity to be interesting. The riffs are good and many of the songs are quite catchy. It doesn't hurt either that there's a bit of groove in the music now and then, as well as the band recurrently slows things down a bit. Most of the songs are short, two minutes or less. That does add to the energy of the CD and I appreciate that. As with so much else music in this genre there's a few samples here and there. These are taken from horror movies. The samples do fit the songs just right and I like the feel that these add to the songs. Another good thing is that the four-piece doesn't overdo it like so many other bands tend to. Burial Ground may not be a magnum opus, but it's an effort that has all I like to hear on a grindcore CD. If you like your music dirty, brutal and in-your-face then I'd give Burial Ground a chance as it's definitely just as good as so much else out there. |
