Man, I love doing this stuff because once in awhile something lands in my mailbox that I otherwise wouldn't have heard and Fogcrawler is one of those surprises. The band is actually not a new band as far as I can tell. Apparently they went under the moniker Stone Misery before changing the name to Fogcrawler. The band plays US death metal with a stint of groove and technicality. Actually I imagine this is pretty much how a merging between Dying Fetus and old Pessimist would sound. Okay it may be an awkward comparison, but I think vocalist Scott Usher at times sound a little like former Pessimist vocalist Rob Kline when he screams but apart from that Scott's vocals is deeper. Whether the band plays innovative music is doubtful, but I do occasionally spot a few slightly unique ideas. A thing that instantly caught my ears were the solos in "Tension" and "Occupational [Work] Disillusionment [Sucks]" I really like that kinda stuff and it adds a lot to the songs. The material is fairly varied and that of course adds significantly to the durability of the album.
The production was done by Chris Djuricic [Fleshgrind, Gorgasm] and the outcome is superb. The sound is fat and at the same time clear without compromising the brutality of the band. "Tension", "Occupational [Work] Disillusionment [Sucks]" and "Immortal Suicide" struck me as being the most worthwhile tracks on Welcome to Your Suffering, but the remaining songs are decent too. Sure it's possible that there may not be a whole lot of new under the sun here, but none the less Welcome to Your Suffering is a solid effort that can stand multiple listens and after all that is what counts. If you like death metal in the vein of Dying Fetus then you should do yourself the favour and check out Fogcrawler because they are definitely worth a listen.
