GLOOM - Mater Tenebrarum

GENRE: Death metal
COUNTRY: Spain
FORMAT: CD
LABEL: Self financed
YEAR: 2009

RATING: 5/10
REVIEWED BY: PSL
PROVIDED BY: Gloom

Gloom is a five-piece death metal band from Madrid, Spain. Mater Tenebrarum is a real DIY effort. The band has produced, mixed, mastered and designed everything on Mater Tenebrarum themselves. The result is not bad, but not all that exciting either.

Gloom definitely has some good riffs and writes songs that has feel and are diverse, but overall the music doesn't feel very strong. Many of the slower parts in the songs are thin and kill off the energy in the music. This is obvious on "The 3rd Undead Squad" and "Wanted". This of course could be the production, but I don't think that alone is to blame. Often the music isn't very tight and it's difficult to ignore.

It's noticeable that the five Spaniards are not inspired by death metal alone. Gloom add bits and pieces of heavy metal, black metal and thrash metal to the music. It does add a lot to the diversity of music, but it also makes it a bit too mellow for my taste.

There are interesting things on Mater Tenebrarum, but there are definitely also a lot that bore this reviewer. I wouldn't write off Gloom, but there's a lot more work to be done before the music gets really exciting.
