I didn't have any expectations at all towards the comeback La Muerte from reformed Dutch death metallers Gorefest as I didn't care at all for their later day material. So I was a bit surprised to say the least when I first heard La Muerte as it's far better than I ever thought it would be. The band have apparently been looking backwards since the music is now closer to Gorefest's early releases Mindloss and False than the more recent efforts. The music these days is mainly mid-tempo based death metal with a large stint of groove and of course the familiar Gorefest sound. The band does occasionally take a detour quicken the pace only to lower it again.
Most of the songs are quite good and it's very clear that the band is made up by routined musicians as the songs are skilfully put together. Moreover the band doesn't hold back on the leads and it really colourizes the soundscape to an even larger degree. The band have achieved a very thick, heavy and somewhat dirty production, but without sounding muddy or too filthy. I may not have liked Gorefest's more recent material, but La Muerte certainly made it apparent to me that Gorefest is still a band to follow despite a couple of off-track albums. Eight in score may be a bit too low, but La Muerte lacks a little to get the nine figure.
