When you think of France you probably think of the Eiffel Tower, the Riviera or the Tour de France and not so much of death metal. Sure France have produced bands like Loudblast and Massacra, but largely the scene have always appeared anonymous in comparison to other European countries.
Possibly Goryptic is a band that could make a difference. They definitely put in their best effort on From Blast to Collapse. Think American styled death metal in the vein of Skinless and Dying Fetus mixed with a bit of Cryptopsy and it should give you an idea of how Goryptic sounds. Sure this mixture is anything but revolutionary and Goryptic don't try any new tricks, but the band is very good at what they do and that is what it comes down to in the end. It's apparent that the Frenchmen are no neophytes. The music is varied and appealing enough to make it something you want to listen to more than just once or twice.
It doesn't make it less interesting that Goryptic doesn't rely that much on being fast. Sure there are plenty of fast constituents in the music, but the band tends to focus a little more on the groove and heavy aspects instead. The result is appealing and the band is able to make it sound like Goryptic and not just like a clone of something else. It doesn't hurt either that the bass regularly is allowed upfront in the soundscape. The production is fat and forceful and provides the music with the weigh it needs. Whether From Blast to Collapse will be an eye opener or not I don't know, but I do know Goryptic have the potential to create something special. There are always room for improvement, but From Blast to Collapse is still a convincing effort.
