GRAVEYARD - One with the Dead
GENRE: Death metal COUNTRY: Spain FORMAT: CD LABEL: Blackseed Productions YEAR: September 1st, 2009 RATING: 8/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: Blackseed Productions The Spanish four-piece Graveyard have come a long way. The song-writing is better and the music overall a lot more exciting than before. The songs are recognizable and the riffs exciting. The music is death metal in the vein of early Entombed, Dismember and Grave. The band adds nothing to the genre, but what they do they do well. I wrote elsewhere that the band tried to mimic Entombed and Dismember a little too much now and then. And of course there are many bands that are a lot worse to idolize, but on One With the Dead it's not much of an issue. Although the hints to the Swedes are obvious it profits the music more than it hurts. I also like that there's a bit of Bolt Thrower here too. The songs are diverse. The band gets around using most of what you'd expect of the genre. There's fast and slow parts, solos and almost Iron Maiden'ish riffing on "Abandoned Churches" and some doomy parts on "The Skull". Besides old school death metal the four-piece also mix in some slower doom-like parts. This of course doesn't get less obvious thanks to the band finishing it all off with the Candlemass song "A Tale of Creation". Dan Swanö also did a bit of guest vocal on that song. Just like the music the production has also gotten a lot better. Swanö has helped out a bit with that too, but the band has done most of it themselves. Fact is that One With the Dead is a conventional effort, but nevertheless a convincing CD. If I didn't know I would think that the Spanish four-piece was from Sweden. That's how convincing the band plays this type of death metal. |
