GUILD OF DESTRUCTION - We Are Vermin
GENRE: Death / black metal COUNTRY: Australia FORMAT: CD LABEL: Grindhead Records YEAR: July 25th, 2009 RATING: 7/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: Grindhead Records The Australian four-piece Guild Of Destruction play a mix of death and black metal. I also spot a bit of thrash metal in the music now and then. I find it a bit tough to pinpoint some exact inspirations, but I spot hints of Swedish black metal in there as well as bits and pieces of Morbid Angel type of death metal. The songs have got personality, but it's not like the music differs a lot from so much else in the genre. Of course that doesn't make it bad and the four-piece are above all convincing. The songs are diverse and the Australians coalesces the fast and slow in the music effectively. I also like that there's a solo or two here and there. It adds a lot to the texture of the songs. There are many good riffs and parts as well. It all helps make We Are Vermin an interesting effort. The vocals vary from the common death metal vocal to a more black metal inspired type of singing. There's nothing different in this, but it works the way it should. Moreover it also underlines some of the contrasts that are in the music. The production is quite standard for this type of music. It's not all that chunky, but it's not thin either. It's actually dirty and to a degree also arid. It fits the music just right. We Are Vermin is not different from so much else, but it's a firm effort that belongs in the better end of the scale. |
