It's been over three years since the last Illdisposed album Kokaiinum. An album which was somewhat criticized for being a sloppy effort and the band also admitted on various occasions that they hadn't taken things very serious due to various reasons apparently connected to their now former label Diehard Music. But things change and now the band is back with a new record on international heavyweight label Roadrunner Records.
1-800 Vindication shows a somewhat different side of the band but there's no need to worry 'cause Illdisposed sound like Illdisposed but the band has continued to evolve like they pretty much have done since the debut Four Depressive Seasons. The music itself seems a lot more aggressive than on the predecessor Kokaiinum. Like for instance in the brutal yet extremely catchy "When You Scream" and the fierce closer "The Final Step" both cementing the band's position as being Denmark's undisputed brutal band #1. But also songs like the groove laden "Dark", "In Search of Souls" and "Jeff" with its harmonious and spine chilling chorus pulls teeth, not to mention the melodic "Now We're History". The band has widely used techno and industrial samples throughout the album and it works surprisingly well and contributes only in a positive manner to the soundscape. Furthermore vocalist Bo Summer has been toying with various vocal effects along with clean parts and the result is superb. It's mainly in the chorus' that this comes to show.
The album was recorded in Combi Sound Studio and Zig Zound Studio by former HateSphere guitarist Ziggy and mixed and mastered by Tue Madsen in Antfarm Studio and the outcome is a sound that is thick and juicy yet with great clarity.
Even though the band has undergone some line-up changes since the previous album it hasn't compromised the sound of the band and 1-800 Vindication is darn close in surpassing the godly There Something Rotten…In the State of Denmark. If this album doesn't give them the recognition they truly deserve then I don't know what will. 1-800 Vindication is one of the highlights of 2004 so far proving that Danish metal is force to reckon with.
