Immolation have always had a reputation for not disappointing their fans, and they sure don't this time either. I expected another powerful and steadfast release from the New Yorkers and that is exactly what Shadows in the Light is. Immolation have never made a habit out of changing direction and Shadows in the Light is in many ways a natural prolongation of the predecessor Harnessing Ruin. The music is still dim and militant death metal so there's not much new under the sun. Immolation still sound like Immolation and I'm thankful for that. Musically the band seems to approach things a little more direct this time. It's noticeable, but nothing that become too apparent in the big picture.

Shadows in the Light is in all aspects a convincing effort. Most of the music sinks in right away and there's no filler or bad songs on the CD, only death metal of the highest calibre. In their own unconventional way the band combines catchiness with dim lines of melody and utter savagery. Perhaps the best examples of this are "Passion Kill", "The Weight of Devotion" and "Whispering Death". Again Immolation worked with engineer Paul Orofino and the result is as usual a somewhat dry, but fat and dirty sound that doesn't jeopardize the lucidity of the music. Shadows in the Light is nothing short of being another forceful effort from the New Yorkers.
