MUTILATED SOUL

Upcoming Italian deathers Mutilated Soul recently released their self financed EP Decomposition, a pretty impressive slap of brutal death metal with references to Incantation. The EP proves that Italy is so much more than just metal in the vein of Rhapsody and Lacuna Coil. A few weeks ago I asked guitarist Nicola Sapziani and vocalist Daniele Pruner about the EP, the influences and the Italian scene among other things.

You chose to put out the EP yourselves. Why was that?
Nicola: Well, this EP was our first release ever. Before that we've only made a promo CD, but it wasn't spread around so we didn't have any idea if there was someone interested in our music. Anyway this self-produced EP wasn't such a bad idea it seems. We've learned a little more about the costs of putting something out and we're very proud of the result.

Have you been approached by any labels about offering a deal after the release of the EP?
Nicola: We're still receiving lots of good reviews so we hope it can help to find a label to sign with it.

To me it sounds like you're inspired by Incantation and American death metal in general. Could you say something about influences?
Nicola: Sure, we're very inspired by lots of American death metal acts like Incantation, Morbid Angel [who I think is our greatest inspiration], Cannibal Corpse as well as many other, but we're also interested in the European death and black metal scenes.

Who write the music in Mutilated Soul?
Nicola: I take care of writing all the music while Daniele writes all the lyrics.

A thing I like a lot is that you have quite a few solos in the songs. A lot of bands sort of ignore solos, but you don't. Why is that?
Nicola: Well, I like solos, but I think about solos like something created to complete a song. They shouldn't be the most important part of a song. If I think about the song "Bloodletting" I realize that the guitar solo is useless because it doesn't add any more than what the rhythm guitars can do.

Are the lyrics important to you and what sort of topics do they deal with?
Daniele: Well, music and words move on in the same direction so you can imagine what kind of feelings they reveal: suffering, agony and death. This is precisely what Decomposition deal with. It's a concept album which is about a soul's decay.

You recorded the album in Italy, but got it mixed by Adam Kuc at Selani Studios in Poland. What were your reasons for doing it that way?
Nicola: We chose to mix the EP at Selani Studios because they've worked with such great acts like Vader and Behemoth. We wanted to be sure of the final result.

With drummer Stefano Spanu joining the band last year I assume you have a stable line-up now?

Daniele: Yes, Stefano joined us right before the recording sessions of Decomposition, but he didn't taken part in the recording, however he is the member that we needed to secure the line-up.

You collaborate with Necrotorture Agency. What sort of things do they help you with?
Nicola: We chose to collaborate with an agency because we wanted Decomposition to have the maximum exposure and support possible. We've only been working together since July, but we're satisfied with the collaboration. Now we only hope to find a label.

How is the Italian death metal scene doing? I've always had the impression that most Italians played power metal in the vein of Rhapsody!
Nicola: Fortunately this is not true. We have lots of good bands like Hour Of Penance, Cadaveric Crematorium, Vomit the Soul and so on.

How does the remainder of 2006 look for Mutilated Soul?
Daniele: We're working on four new songs, which sounds more elaborate and brutal than the old stuff and we hope to do some shows very soon.

Anything you wish to add to conclude this interview?
Nicola: Thanks a lot for the interview. Check out our official pages at www.mutilatedsoul.com and www.myspace.com/mutilatedsoul. Keep on rotting!

Daniele: Thank you very much for the support. Stay sick!
