Some weeks ago I found the debut CD Diabolical Mutilation of Tormented Souls from Brazilian deathers In Torment among my mail. To me Brazil has always bred some of the most wicked death metal around and In Torment is no exception. The band have as far as I could find out put out two demos and been on a few compilations prior to signing with their native label Rapture Records.
The music is technical death metal in the vein of Disincarnate with some references to early Gorguts and Deeds Of Flesh. Perhaps not the most original cocktail, but it works without any complaint and the band does pull it off without sounding like a copycat. In Torment is very good at varying things by not just blasting blindly ahead or playing the same riff over and over. Variation is one of the fundamental keywords here and it instantly becomes clear. Also the addition of a lead here and there help flavour the music even further and adds positively to the durability of the songs No doubt that the band know what they are doing.
The production is clear and powerful allowing the listener to explore all the little details. Again it reminds me of Disincarnate and this should only be seen as a compliment. If In Torment continue as shown on Diabolical Mutilation of Tormented Souls then I wouldn't be surprised if they could become as big as their countrymen in Krisiun, Rebaelliun or Nephasth. The potential is definitely there.
