Extinction Aftermath is the latest effort from the German death metal band Jack Slater. The band took their name after a movie character played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. That didn't exactly put my expectations up high and it turns out not to be a bad thing.

The music is technical death metal, but where bands like Necrophagist or Prejudice are able to mix the technical side with catchy parts Jack Slater often tends to fall short. It's not enough that you're able to make challenging songs if the music isn't very exciting, and that's how I feel about most of Extinction Aftermath.

The Germans do understand how to vary the music and add some groove, chugging breakdowns and slamming riffs. The music also has some thrash metal type of riffing now and then, but in spite of all of this the music doesn't have that something that makes the songs really exciting.

The bass is audible and that's definitely works as an asset. Something that I miss is more fast parts. Too often the band goes for a slower type of style. It does work well on "Pheromon", "Funkenflug" and "4 8 15 16 23 42", but on the whole it's also a big part of why Extinction Aftermath gets uninteresting almost right away. Sure the band does play fast here and there, but it's not enough to make much of a difference. It annoys me a bit as the music mostly is interesting and has the most energy when the five-piece decides to play fast.

No doubt that Extinction Aftermath is versatile and that the band can play, but on the whole it's just not a very exciting effort. The unforgettable parts are nowhere to be found and good playing alone is not enough to save things from getting boring.
