KILLING ADDICTION - Fall of the Archetypes
GENRE: Death metal COUNTRY: USA FORMAT: CD LABEL: Xtreem Music YEAR: March 15th, 2010 RATING: 8/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: Xtreem Music The history of Killing Addiction goes as far back as 1998. The Florida based band put out the debut full-length "Omega Factor" in 1993, but disappear some time later. In 2006 the band got back together. The music on Fall of the Archetypes is old fashioned death metal. The band seems to be inspired by Bolt Thrower, Incantation and Morbid Angel among others. As the inspiration may suggest the music doesn't sound like the typical death metal from Florida. The music is much more in the vein of Incantation, but riff wise it's not as dark. The vocals on the other hand are low and not very different from how John McEntee sings in Incantation. The songs are diverse and the band has no trouble handling both the fast and slow parts. The music often has that early 90's vibe to it and I really like the disturbing keyboard part on "Dark Tomorrow". It adds a lot to the mood of the song. The riffs are above all good and Killing Addiction is good at making the music intense without just going for all-out brutality. Some examples of this include the titletrack and "Vita Adeus". There are riffs on "Vita Adeus" that actually has a lot in common with the God Dethroned song "Necromagnon". The two actually sound much alike. I have my doubts that everything on Fall of the Archetypes is from the same recording. The last part of the CD is a bit different in sound and looking at the tracklist it's also almost the same as on the bands 1998 EP Dark Tomorrow. This of course doesn't change that the music is good. The production could have better as the drums tend to be a bit too high in the mix. It does make it all feel a bit muddy, but not enough so things tend to vanish. Fall of the Archetypes is on the whole a good effort and fans of old school death metal should have no problem liking it. |
