The American trio Macabre is a disturbed band. The music, the imagery and the lyrics among other things underline this. And that's exactly what I love about the trio. Apart from a DVD in 2006 and an EP in 2010 the bands latest effort Murder Metal was put out in 2003, but you don't notice that on Grim Scary Tales.

You get what you expect of Macabre; the songs are tight and bizarre as always. The music is a peculiar mix of death metal, thrash and grindcore as well as country and various other types of music. That and other things make the trio anything but a standard death metal band.

Just like the music itself the vocals are also diverse and not too typical. The vocals are mostly clean nowadays, but are often mixed with a death metal vocal or an uncanny high-pitched shouting as well as a clean country music type of vocal.

If it's diversity you're looking for then you'll find it on Grim Scary Tales. The music rely on so many different features that it can get a little too much. It takes a bit of fine-tunings to get used to the three Americans bizarre music. It's definitely not for all and sundry, but if you get used to it there's lots of catchy songs on Grim Scary Tales.

The song-writing is good and it's obvious that the band know their terrain. Just check out "Locusta", "Dracula" or for that matter almost any other song on the CD and you'll know what I'm saying. There's a version of Venom's "Countess Bathory" on the CD. It's done note by note and I like it. It fits well with the rest of the songs.

If you like what Macabre has put out in the past, then you'll enjoy Grim Scary Tales. I'm not the biggest fan, but I like some of what the trio has done and Grim Scary Tales definitely has made me want to go look for more music by the three hillbillies.
