If you prefer your death metal like it was played back in the day then Mundo Cripta is difficult to avoid. After three albums on Razorback Records the Spanish trio has now moved to Throne Records / No Escape Records. Like always Machetazo create a competent mix of stripped down dirty death metal and early grindcore. It's not like the Spaniards do anything that haven't already been done or is done by many others, but the trio pulls it off convincingly and that is what makes a difference. The band draws on many of the typical inspirations. Machetazo predominantly make use of things from the early Swedish and American death metal and grindcore underground.

The Swedish references are noticeable in a Sunlight Studio type of guitar sound and riffs that often are in the vein of early Entombed, but the band also find a lot of inspiration in American bands like Autopsy and Repulsion, making it all very grim and brutal sounding. Machetazo has an ability to create gory music that is uncanny - it's almost like an audible horror movie. The songs are primitive, but have the right amount of consistency to be interesting. The riffs are good and the songs don't tend to be anonymous or get boring. In addition the audible bass, the disturbing samples and the band singing in Spanish contribute to making Mundo Cripta a complete and diverse effort.
