Ultratumba is a collection of rare tracks, EP's and 7' releases put out between 1998 and 2004 by the Spanish trio Machetazo. I'm not too familiar with Machetazo's music, but Ultratumba definitely seems like a good place to start. The music is dirty and stripped down death metal heavily inspired by horror and zombie flicks. It's obvious that these gorefreaks know their musical references. The band pays tribute to those by including their renditions of songs from bands like Venom, Massacre, Repulsion, Impetigo and Carcass to name five.
Machetazo sing in their native language. I think this goes really well with their obsession for horror and gore. It provides the music with the feel of a b-horror movie from the 80's and this is only meant as a compliment. Having in mind that this is a compilation of material spanning over a longer period the musical evolvement of the band is not particular noticeable, but the music have enough charm to let this be of no larger concern. Ultratumba is a great way to get the rarities put out by the Spaniards. Fans of bands like Autopsy, Impetigo, Repulsion, Abscess and those similar shouldn't miss out on this release.
