MENTAL DEMISE - Final Step to Future Madness
GENRE: Brutal death metal COUNTRY: Ukraine FORMAT: CD LABEL: Xtreem Music YEAR: February 1st, 2009 RATING: 8/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: Xtreem Music Ukrainian five-piece Mental Demise is proof of that East European death metal is much more than just bands from Poland, Slovakia or Russia. The Ukrainians have put out various split CD's and two full-length CD's prior to Final Step to Future Madness and it shows. Mental Demise plays brutal death metal, but of the more groovy kind. The songs are short, catchy and straight forward. The band is good at varying things by changing between the fast and somewhat slower parts. Moreover there are lots of breakdowns in the songs as well. There's no unnecessarily filler or annoying samples to divert. The vocals are in the vein of Deicide as the Ukrainians use the same type of effect on the vocals now and then. Overall the music is conventional, but the band does try a few different things that work effectively like the alarm in "Why Do You Need a God?" and the shouting on "House of Chthon". It's not big things, but they do make a difference. I like the production. It's meaty, crusty and the bass is audible. Nothing seems to vanish in favour of one or the other. Final Step to Future Madness may be conventional, but it's an effort that has the riffs, the inspiration and drive to be exciting. |
