MISERY INDEX - Heirs to Thievery
GENRE: Death metal COUNTRY: USA FORMAT: CD LABEL: Relapse Records YEAR: May 11th, 2010 RATING: 8/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: Relapse Records Misery Index hasn't let down on Retaliate, Discordia, Traitors or any of the bands other efforts and Heirs to Thievery is no exception. I've always liked what the four-piece have done, but the last CD Traitors was to me the strongest so far. I sort of had my doubts if the Americans could outdo what they did on that CD, but they have almost have. Heirs to Thievery is not Traitors but the two are not all that different. Except that the music overall is a bit faster on Heirs to Thievery. There are other marginal differences in the song-writing, but nothing all too obvious. One of the most obvious things is the production. In a way I miss the tone that Kurt Ballou got the band on Traitors as it felt a bit darker. Misery Index has used a different studio on Heirs to Thievery and it does wear off on the music, but I wouldn't say in a off-putting way. As with every other Misery Index CD the music is groovy death metal mixed with bits of grindcore, but it's also much more than just that and that's what I like about the band. The four Americans mix bits and pieces of hardcore, punk and various other genres in as well. A song like "The Spectator" has a strong hardcore ring to it while others like "Fed to the Wolves" and "Heirs to Thievery" are fast and straight forward, but the band doesn't overdo it. A song like "The Seventh Calvary" is almost opposite with its slow, groovy vibe. The four-piece don't overdo the use of solos, but a few are effectively put in when needed. As always bassist Jason Netherton and guitarist Mark Kloeppel match each other well on the vocals. It adds the needed diversity to the vocals. It's obvious that Misery Index continues to evolve their sound, bit by bit. Heirs to Thievery is perhaps the most well-rounded and consistent effort that the band has put together to date. The four Americans have put out another strong effort. |
