The death metal four-piece Neter is from Seville, Spain. The debut Nec Spe Nec Metu is groove laden death metal with a few hints of thrash metal. The music is conventional and straight forward. The song-writing is good and the riffs are diverse and above all heavy. A lot of the time the Spaniards relies on the heavy in the music and that works well. Combined with some groove it makes the music both fat and compact.
To vary things a bit more Neter often go for a faster approach, but not in a blastbeat kind of way. It's more the old type of fast that for an example is on Death's Spiritual Healing, without saying Neter sound anything like Death. Another thing I like is that there's some solos now and then. These add a lot to the mood and diversity of the music. It's needed as the band sometimes tends to drag the riffs and parts out a little too long.
The bass is allowed to room in the soundscape. It adds a chunky vibe to the music. "The Death of the Liturgy" is an example of this. There vocals are standard and without much variation, but the harsh and guttural growls fits the music just right.
Something that profits the music is the meaty production. It emphasises the heavy and groovy in the songs. Nec Spe Nec Metu is a conventional effort, but at the same time a convincing debut that should have no trouble appealing to fans of bands like Grave and Jungle Rot, among others.
