The Australian four-piece Nexus play progressive death metal. The band is inspired by Death and Cynic among others, but also something as atypical as Frank Zappa and Neil Young play a role in the bands music.

Nexus blend everything from death metal to progressive rock, math rock and avant-garde in their music. It's all noticeable and thanks to this the four Australians create music that has personality. It's in particular the inspiration from Death that is obvious. It comes to show on "The Paradise Complex - I - The Reckoning" among other songs.

The songs are detailed and often switch between brutal and softer rock-like parts. I like that the music isn't limited to a single genre and that the band know how to integrate these different inputs. New things seems to pop up with each listen and that is what makes The Paradise Complex interesting.

The music is complex, but Nexus don't overdo it. There's a balance in what the four-piece is doing and nothing seems left to circumstances. The band adds a few samples now and then. These samples add something almost cosmic to the music and bind some of the songs together.

The production is clear and it's easy to hear what is going on. On the opposite it's a minus that the sound is a bit dry and not that compact. It's nothing however that spoils the general impression.

If you like progressive death metal in the vein of Death and Cynic then The Paradise Complex is worth considering.
