ORDER OF ENNEAD - An Examination of Being
GENRE: Black/death metal COUNTRY: USA FORMAT: CD LABEL: Earache Records YEAR: April 19th, 2010 RATING: 6/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: Earache Records The American four-piece Order Of Ennead features Steve Asheim of Deicide and Kevin Quirion of Council Of The Fallen in the line-up. In spite of this it's a band that I've not paid much attention to. Sure I've heard a song or two from the 2008 self titled debut, but the music wasn't something that got me really excited and to some degree I tend to feel the same about An Examination of Being. A big part of why that is, is that the music is a mixture of black and death metal. I usually don't like this blend much and that is also why I've kind of avoided the band in the past. The American four-piece do write songs that are both diverse and overall vigorous. There are many solos and these add to the music in terms of variation, but do also provide lots of soul to the songs. However things are not all good and there are elements in the music that I could do without. I don't mind the black metal riffs. These add to the diversity of the songs, but the vocals are a different story. I miss more variation in those. Often the vocals tend to sound the same and it does wear off on the music in a tiring way. It would have been nice with some death metal type of vocals to add some contrast. It's of course not all bad and there are many things I like about An Examination of Being. Looking at the CD as a whole is a versatile effort, but the song that stands out the most I would say is the titletrack. I like how the bass gets some workspace on that song and it does make a difference. An Examination of Being is an effort that fans of the band or style will enjoy. I just don't feel much for this blend of black and death metal and that is probably also why I'm not all that excited about what Order Of Ennead is doing. |
