This definitely is a bit different from what usually comes from Unique Leader. I can't say I'm captured by Pillory's noisy and somewhat chaotic escapades. The music is a strange blend of noise, grindcore and death metal with the main focus on the noise. I would lie if I said it was captivating, actually it almost immediately gets rather strenuous to listen to. Clearly there are bits and pieces here and there that sound good, but they simply tend to drown beneath the massive and unbearable structures of dissonance.
I completely fail to find anything worthwhile on No Lifeguard at the Gene Pool. All the tracks quickly tend to sound like a monotone blur of noise without any head or tail. The music might be brutal and very extreme, but this definitely doesn't make it good. Pillory fall outside of the otherwise good taste that Unique Leader has for spotting and signing interesting bands. No Lifeguard at the Gene Pool is a horrible release that instantly made me want to hit the eject button on the CD-player and so I did.
