I didn't like Mangled, Hollowed Out and Vomit Filled and I felt pretty much the same way about Dawn of the Necrofecalizer so I didn't expect it to be any different with Sledgehammer Holocaust, but I was wrong. The music on Sledgehammer Holocaust is not that different from what the Canadians have put out before, but somehow the result is more interesting than I dared to hope for. The song-writing has become better, which songs like "Sledgehammer Holocaust [Shit and Bone Infused]" and "Eye Sockets Venting Black, Rotten Blood" prove. There's a good amount of variation in what Putrescence show, but a returning problem with their mix of grindcore and death metal is the obvious lack of heaviness and real nerve.

A lot of this has to do with the thin production - this has always seemed to be an issue. The poor production is also why the music tends to appear thin and not very tight, but also the somewhat punk-like feel some of the songs has now and then doesn't exactly make it more brutal. The bands bizarre humour is still a big part of the music and whereas I didn't appreciate it much on previous releases I actually find it entertaining on Sledgehammer Holocaust. Fans of Putrescence will most likely love the album as the band don't deviate much from their previous doings on Sledgehammer Holocaust. I'm not a fan, but this is definitely the Canadians best effort so far.
