I liked Black Metal Jesus quite a bit so I was looking forward to the sophomore album from the Danish black metallers Horned Almighty. The band has since the debut expanded the line-up with guitarist Aries and bassist Luger.
This appear to have worn of quite bit on the songwriting. The music is far more varied than on Black Metal Jesus and the bass has gotten a lot more room in the soundscape. Actually the songs are very bass driven which I think works as an asset. The music is still old school black metal a la DarkThrone and similar, but it appears to have gotten a more dirty rock 'n' roll kind of feel to it nowadays. A track like "Glorification" have an almost Motörhead kind of ring to it which I find to be a positive thing. Another thing I like is that the band hasn't felt the urge to speed things up too much. They still go ahead in their own moderate tempo. The tempo does vary a bit, but it never become really fast and it suits well.
The production is also a lot better this time. It's still dirty, but at the same time also relatively clear. Again this serves as a plus. As I wrote a little earlier most of the songs have this catchy and somewhat rock 'n' roll kind of feel to them, but in particular "Glorification", "The Devil's Music", "To Despise the Life" and "Repentance" are good examples of this. I think this is a positive move and it surely has given the music a sense of identity. If you liked Black Metal Jesus then you'll love The Devil's Music as it sees improvement on every front.
