RINGS OF SATURN - Embryonic Anomaly
GENRE: Technical death metal COUNTRY: USA FORMAT: CD LABEL: Unique Leader Records YEAR: March 1st, 2011 RATING: 8/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: Unique Leader Records Rings Of Saturn is a Californian three-piece. The music is contemporary, technical and brutal death metal in the vein of Hiroshima Will Burn, Decrepit Birth and Viraemia, but the band also finds inspiration in conventional death metal. So the music isn't just more of the same. The three Americans make music that is difficult to put an exact tag on. It's in the vein of the aforementioned bands, but the trio is able to set their music apart and add personality to the songs. The music is spacey and intricate. At first I didn't like it much as it felt like a blur of guitars and drums because of the pace and all the sweep picking. The music is mostly fast, but the trio often gear down a notch or two. Another trait I like is that the bass surface now and then. It gives the songs a little more thickness. As you can tell there are lots of changes in the music. There's so much going on that it's difficult to digest right away. It can get a bit too much, but the diversity is a big part of what makes the CD exciting. The band uses a bit of keyboard now and then. I like that as it adds a lot to the feel of the music. It's not as sci-fi as what Nocturnus did, but it does set an eerie sort of feel. The vocals are a mix of low end growls and a snarling type of growl. It's very standard, but it fits the music just right. The production is just right. It's thick, but open enough so nothing tends to vanish in the mix. I like that Rings Of Saturn mix the modern with the old. That is a big part of why the music doesn't get too much or boring. However it's an effort that you don't take in right away, but if you like your music complex and not too typical then Embryonic Anomaly is hard to avoid. |
