ROTTEN SOUND - Cycles
GENRE: Grindcore COUNTRY: Finland FORMAT: CD LABEL: Spinefarm Records YEAR: January 9th, 2008 RATING: 6/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: Universal Cycles more or less continues where the Consume to Contaminate EP left off. The Finnish four-piece has a lot in common with Dismember in terms of the guitar sound, but also the likeness in the riffs is difficult to ignore. But it doesn't constitute a problem as the music is more grindcore in the vein of Nasum. I like the dirty and meaty tone that the music has. It gives the songs a turgid and strong feel. Rotten Sound don't take it slow and it feels like the band blast a lot more on Cycles than they did on the EP. It can get somewhat a blur now and then due to the thick production, but largely the Finns are able to save it. Not least thanks some slower and more mid-tempo orientated parts and on the whole Rotten Sound is good at making the music varied. But also the way that band mix death metal and grindcore provide the music with the needed nuance. It doesn't hurt either that most of the songs are close to, or under the two minutes. It makes the music that more interesting as things isn't repeated too long. It's no work of art, but Cycles is an effort that has all it takes to be entertaining. |
