I didn't realize that Satanic Angel was a one-man effort before I read the info sheet that came along with the CD. Phil Williams handle everything from the guitars and keyboards to the drum programming. He even recorded Raping Christ at his home studio and mixed and mastered the CD himself. The outcome is pretty good, but the drums sound a little thin and messed up at times.
Musically it appears as if Phil is influenced by Akercocke and perhaps a bit of Immolation and Deicide too, but he succeed in incorporating other things as well so the songs never sound like an exact blueprint of anything the aforementioned have done. The keyboard is mostly used for intros/outros, but it's also tastefully incorporated in the instrumental "Reflection". There's a good balance between the fast and the more mid-tempo orientated material. This helps provide the music with the right amount of nerve and vitality it needs to stay interesting. This clearly shows in "Suffocation at Birth" and "Possessed".
The CD may lack a little power here and there and sure the production could have been a little fatter and complex, but for a one-man effort Raping Christ is a most impressive piece of work. Fans of the bands I mentioned as being an inspiration can safely check out Satanic Angel.
