SCRAMBLED DEFUNCTS - Souls Despising the God
GENRE: Technical death metal COUNTRY: Russia FORMAT: CD LABEL: SFC Records YEAR: December 28th, 2009 RATING: 6/10 REVIEWED BY: PSL PROVIDED BY: SFC Records This is not what I expected it to be. I was sure that the music of Scrambled Defuncts was brutal Americanized slam death metal in the vein of Katalepsy or Abominable Putridity, but I was obviously wrong. The music is technical death metal with a lot of orchestral and bizarre, almost baroque parts. I find it interesting and I like that the Russians try to do something that isn't all that conventional, but apparently something went wrong in the mix. The orchestral parts often drown the guitars, the drums and it all end up feeling plastered and unnatural. It does wear off on the music in a bad way. In particular because it to often feel like a clutter. I do like the orchestral theme as it adds personality to the songs, but it's also what makes the music hard to digest. Overall the music is diverse, but some songs work better than the other, like "In Authority of Madness" or "Retribution". It's mostly at the end of the CD that things get too much. I could easily have done without the last two songs. Kudos to Scrambled Defuncts for trying something that is a little different. A lot of it does work very well, but it's too bad that a fuck up in the mix and some filler at the end of the CD come in the way. Otherwise I'm sure it could have been a lot more exciting than it is. If the five-piece get things like these sorted out on the next effort, then I'm sure it will be a lot more interesting. |
